What Does A Good Loading Dock Consist Of?

Across the country millions of lorries and trucks turn up to warehouses and distribution centres on a daily basis, delivering thousands of tons worth of cargo to all of our home counties and beyond. But with warehouses and depots varying in heights and measurements, you need a well equipped loading dock to make sure that the load can be unloaded and loaded ready for the next destination.

Below, we take a look at what a good loading dock will normally consist of and the different features that normally make a loading dock area complete.

Dock Bumpers – the dock bumpers are a critical part making sure that the loading dock survives the everyday usage from massive lorries and trucks by protecting the dock from damage. They can also be used as a form of guidance when a truck or lorry is backing into the dock, as they can safely guide the lorry in without damaging the truck in any way.

Dock leveller – As we mentioned in a previous article, the dock leveller is basically the connection between the floor and the loading dock, offering fork lift trucks and human beings the chance to access to dock to either unload or load ready for the next truck to arrive.

Dock lift – Serving the same function as the dock leveller, but operating in a similar style to the scissor lift to allow for much great height issues, which can be idea for a dock that is a long way from the floor or ground.

Dock seals – These dock seals are usually foam blocks which the lorry or truck will press against when parked up, usually at the rear of the lorry for those that operate in the colder areas of the country as they can help to provide added protection against the weather and the elements in difficult climates.

Vehicle (lorry or truck) restraining system – A metal hook which has to be very strong that is attached to the bottom of the dock, allowing the frame or the rear bumper of the trailer to be attached to the dock at all times during loading and unloading, which of course would be a critical hazard during the loading operation.

Dock lighting system – Most commonly a portable light that as the name suggest, offers lighting for the loading operation which is crucial for night time loading and unloading, especially in the Winter when the day light is often short on hours.

Although loading bays do different in terms of the equipment that will use and the features they will rely on, the functions above tend to be the basics of what will really make a loading bay work.
